Unit 1 Activity 2 - Making books for pupils - Exemplar
2
I needed to create a non-fiction book for my class to use
in the National Literacy Strategy, and also wished to tie in the term's theme
of London. The class therefore went out on a boat trip, and took the digital
camera to record scenes in such a way as it would tell the story of our day
out. We also took a normal camera to augment the other.
Once back at school I downloaded the photos as JPEG's and
emptied the disk so it would be ready for next time. I used a scanner to scan
the photographs taken using the normal camera, and was able to incorporate them
in this way.
I then used Microsoft Publisher to design the pages of the
book, printing the pictures in two halves so I could make it bigger and added
text. I didn't make the text symbol enhanced as it's primary use will be as a
book to be read to the class.
My main objectives have been to enable the children to
improve their concentration during NLS, as they are very motivated by the book,
to enable them to discuss and answer questions about the contents of the book,
to raise their awareness of London and their environment. In all these areas it
has been a great success.
