Unit 1 Activity 9 - Recording events - Exemplar 3
The screens that you can see are a sample of a 13 page
Switch It Maker book constructed by the pupils. The digital camera was used by
the staff and pupils to collect evidence of our morning visit to Morrisons.
On returning to school the more able pupils added a
commentary to the chosen screens.
Below is a scanned section of a Key Skills Target Sheet
filled in prior to the visit. The Talking Book creates a means of pupils
undertaking meaningful and constructive self-evaluation.
This talking book was made accessible to all pupils via a
Microtouch monitor but one of the more disabled youngsters viewed via a Switch
Board (keyboard) and a Big Mac single switch.
I particularly like this means of a multimedia presentation
because it enables a non-speaking youngster to use the voices of his/her
friends to make a presentation to an audience e.g.
1. Demonstrate to a visitor what the class does on Friday
mornings. 2. Show what their targets are etc.

Viewing the book on returning to school and revisiting it
sometime in the future means that non verbal youngsters and the more
handicapped (often the same group) can become part of the discussion.
