Unit A - Creating a page for the school web site
Swiss Cottage School, Camden
I started off by planning what I wanted on my web page on
paper and then used word to create some word searches for pupils to print. This
helps to make the site more interesting for pupils as they are not simply
looking at different pages on the internet, they can print and complete the
sheets for themselves.
I took some photos with our Malvica digital camera. The
beauty of this camera is that photos are stored directly onto a floppy disc
with extraction files that download onto the computer for easy photo viewing.
No extra photo package is required. Examples of pupil work were saved onto
floppy disc from the hard drive of the computer in the Science room where the
work was completed. Finally I used Microsoft front page to design my science
home page. I selected my font (comic sans) and highlighted the text and chose a
colour. I inserted a photo of myself so that the pupils will identify with the
page.
I was now ready to assemble my web page and its links and
then upload the page to the school website. I opened front page and found my
file. I needed to create 3 more pages that I could use for hyperlinks with
different files on them to match the options that I had put on my home page. I
clicked file, then new, then web or page then blank. This gave me a new html
page that I could input information onto. I then used the insert icon to input
either a file (for the student work) or picture (for the photos). I repeated
this until I had all of the information that I wanted on each page. I then
saved each of my pages in front page. For the word searches that I had
produced, I wanted the pupils to be able to open them in word as this makes
them easier to print so I saved the files to the hard drive of the computer. I
went to my network places in my computer, then to shared documents on computer
1 in the IT room, school web site and then pasted in the files so that I could
use them.
I created hyperlinks between each of my pages by
highlighting the text that I had already typed and highlighted, right clicked
with the mouse and selected hyperlink. Then I scrolled down to find the file
name that I wanted and selected it with a single left click. I changed the text
for the header at the top of the page, added a screen tip then clicked on ok. I
used the same process to create hyperlinks back to the science page for each of
my 3 pages so that it is easier for the pupils to use.
Before publishing my web page to the web site I view the
pages in the browser to make sure that they were the correct size (our pupils
are fine scrolling up and down but tend to find it difficult scrolling across a
page). When I was happy I published the pages to the web. To do this I went
into file, publish web, Typed in the web address, inserted the user name and
password. I then scrolled down the files looking for any of my files with a
tick. I then right clicked on the file and selected publish.
You can find the web page at
www.swisscottage.camden.sch.uk enter via the pupils icon,
click on work and the select science work.
