Bruce Douglas
Teacher and AAC Coordinator, Primary Curriculum
Coordinator and Senior Management, Grove Park Special School
"My name is Bruce Douglas and I work as a teacher at Grove
Park Special School where I am also AAC coordinator, primary curriculum
coordinator and senior management. I have been teaching for 11 years, the past
6 of which have been at Grove Park.
The children, aged 2-19 years, range from mainstream
equivalent attainment to SLD but are characterised primarily by having a
physical disability. Over a quarter of the pupils are AAC users.
I became interested in computer (Apple Mac) technology and
AAC in the temporary absence of any SLT at school and established the AAC
development group to drive interests of AAC users within and beyond the school,
(details in school Web site:
www.grovepark.brent.sch.uk/AACDG.html).
I have given extensive INSET training in my school and have
spoken at the AAC SIG in Oxford about inclusion and use of technology. I have
worked with the ACE Centre on AAC and Literacy and am currently involved as a
steering group member in the production of an AAC users peer interaction manual
for the Wolfson Centre."
