Gillian Hazell
Communication Therapist / Specialist Speech and Language
Therapist ACE Centre
Following qualification as a speech and language therapist,
Gillian worked as a generalist speech and language therapist for 2 years.
During this time she started working in a school for children with physical
disabilities. This post became full time after two years. Gillian was
instrumental in introducing augmentative communication to the school and became
involved with graphic and manual communication systems during this time. During
Gillian's four years at the school, it was awarded a grant to set up as an
exemplar school leading the way with technology. Gillian worked as a member of
the team introducing technology to the school. Also during this time, Gillian
completed an M.Sc. in Human Communication.
Gillian started working at the ACE Centre two years after it
started and has remained there ever since! She is involved in assessing young
people with communication difficulties, training and research and development.
She is responsible for organising the loan library, which is available to
children who have been assessed by the ACE Centre. Gillian has been involved
with projects looking at the development of graphic symbol languages (European
project) and the development of AAC Policies in Schools. She is involved with
the Special Interest Group in Augmentative and Alternative Communication,
Blissymbol Communication UK and the International Blissymbol Panel. She is also
a regional advisor in AAC for the Royal College of Speech and Language
Therapists.
