Hardware
Digital Camera There are many
to choose from but look out for the following features:
- LCD preview screen so that pupils can take
photographs more easily
- rechargeable batteries (non-rechargeables get used
up very quickly), preferably NiMH, and a power supply
- flash for low-light (indoor) photos
- plenty of picture storage capacity on the camera,
or it will soon fill up and pictures will have to be moved to your computer or
deleted
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection to the
computer (check that your computer and operating system support USB) for
quicker picture transfer than a standard (RS232) serial link
Scanner
Flat bed colour scanners are now quite
inexpensive. They suit both photographic prints and pictures on paper. There
are also film scanners (for negatives and transparencies) but these are less
versatile and much more expensive. An alternative is to have your film scanned
for you onto a PhotoCD when it is being processed. This can give some of the
best results.
Overlay Keyboard There are a
number of different boards available.

- IntelliKeys Board
- Discover Board
Microphone
The better the quality of microphone you
have the better the quality of the recording; but even cheap stalk microphones
(Creative Labs, Labtech etc) can give good results, so long as recording levels
are set appropriately. Noise-cancelling microphones are also worth considering.
Experiment to find what best suits your pupils.
Printer
Colour inkjet printers are very
versatile. If possible, compare the running costs of different models.
