Co-ordinator, IT/SEN Service, Highland Council
I have been working in the field of ICT and Special
Educational Needs since 1992. I was working at that time in a mainstream school
in Dundee with an attached unit for pupils with visual impairments. With blind
and visually impaired pupils in my class I had to get to grips with new and
different technologies that allowed for their inclusion in the curriculum.
I was seconded to an IT/SEN post with the then Tayside
Regional Council and set up the ASSIST Centre which offered an advice and
support service to Tayside schools. This project was linked to the Microcentre
at Dundee University where prediction software was being developed.
In 1995 I moved to Highland Council to set up an IT/SEN
Service where I continue to work as the service's co-ordinator. The Service
offers technological assessment across the entire range of special educational
needs as well as advice, support, and training to staff in our Education
Service. We also work closely with parents and Health professionals.
I cover an area of Scotland that is larger than the country
of Belgium (so I'm told) so I get lots of thinking time between visits to
distant and far-flung schools! I live in Contin and am based in Dingwall with
the Advisory Service.
