Independent Special Needs ICT Consultant/Adviser for
Information Technology (Special Needs), Wiltshire LEA
Ian Butterworth is a part-time independent Special Needs ICT
Consultant and part-time Adviser for Information Technology (Special Needs) for
Wiltshire LEA.
He started teaching in 1976 after working in the textile
industry as a textile technologist. He taught for 10 years, 5 of which were
teaching pupils with a variety of special educational needs. In 1986 Ian became
Assistant Manager at Bristol SEMERC where he was responsible for the
dissemination of ICT/SEN information to schools, teachers and LEAs across the
South West of England and South Wales. In addition Ian ran many INSET courses
for teachers and was heavily involved in the MESU conferences and courses for
Advisory Teachers.
In 1988 Ian became the Adviser for Information Technology
(Special Needs) for Wiltshire LEA. For the past 12 years he has been
responsible for ICT/SEN support for schools, teachers and individual pupils. He
has provided a wide range of INSET for teachers from both special and
mainstream settings. He has been responsible for the assessment and provision
of ICT for individual pupils with communication difficulties and recording
difficulties.
Ian has been involved in several national special needs and
ICT initiatives including the MESU Special Needs Software Group, the MESU
training of Advisory Teachers for ICT and the ICAN DfEE/DoH communication aids
project. He has contributed to several books and publications. He is currently
a member of the ACE Centre Consultancy Group.
