Education Development Officer, Communication Aids for Language and Learning (CALL) Centre University of Edinburgh

Sandra graduated as a primary school teacher and worked in mainstream schools for a number of years before teaching in the special education sector covering both primary and secondary age groups. She was appointed to the Lanarkshire Learning Support Service where her interest in the use of computers to enhance the learning opportunities of pupils with special education needs was recognised and was seconded to work with pupils requiring microtechnology to enable them to access the curriculum. As the Microtechnology Support Coordinator Sandra worked with pupils, their parents and teachers from all sectors and stages of education throughout Lanarkshire. She was one of the writers of 'Accessing the Curriculum Through Microtechnology' which was distributed to all schools in Strathclyde.

During this time Sandra studied for an OU degree and then went on to study for the Certificate in Special Educational Needs which led on to the Diploma in Support for Learning from Strathclyde University.

Following the reorganisation of local authorities Sandra became SEN and ICT Advisory Teacher for the new South Lanarkshire Council where she continued to be involved in the assessment of pupils for microtechnology, training for teachers and parents, and running in service courses. In October 1999 Sandra was seconded to the CALL Centre team and has been involved in the assessment and support for individual pupils, in service courses for teachers and other professionals and in school staff training in several authorities across Scotland.

Whilst still teaching in mainstream schools Sandra joined MAPE (Micros and Primary Education) and is at present the Chairperson of the Scottish Steering Committee and is the Scottish representative on the MAPE Executive Council.
